The growth reflects decades of change in how Bangkok residents organise around books. Early clubs formed among foreign residents working along Silom Road and in the diplomatic compounds near Sathorn, where gatherings stayed small and centred on English-language titles imported through local distributors.

From Silom Gatherings to City-Wide Events

By the mid-1990s the British Club on Sathorn Road began listing monthly book discussions in its newsletter, drawing participants who later moved events to public spaces such as the National Library on Samsen Road. Thai readers joined in larger numbers after 2005, when several independent shops started stocking bilingual editions and hosting bilingual sessions. The Bangkok Literary Circle, formed in 2012, now coordinates readings at the Bangkok Art and Culture Centre near the National Stadium BTS station and at smaller venues in Thong Lor.

City data released last month by the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration culture office shows 62 registered book clubs operating in 2025, up from 28 listed in 2010.
