Bangkok dog and cat owners must register pets and implant microchips, with the Animal Rearing and Release Control 2024 ordinance taking effect on January 10, 2026.

Owners are required to register pets and implant microchips by law. Registration must happen within 120 days of birth or within 30 days of bringing the pet into the city. Proof of rabies vaccination forms a mandatory part of the registration process.

These steps apply to both new arrivals and locally born pets. Failure to meet the timelines can place owners outside the legal framework introduced in 2026.

Pet Limits by Property Size

The ordinance sets strict maximum numbers of pets according to the size of the property. Condos measuring 20 to 80 square meters allow one pet, while those larger than 80 square meters allow two pets. Landed properties follow a sliding scale from two pets on plots up to 20 square wa to six pets on plots exceeding 100 square wa.

These limits apply uniformly and determine how many animals any household can keep under the current rules.

Outdoor Conduct Requirements

Pets taken outside must remain on a secure leash or inside a carrier. Owners are legally required to clean up after their pets in public places to meet the standards set by the ordinance.

Tenant and Landlord Obligations

Tenants must obtain written consent from their landlord before keeping pets. This consent sits alongside the registration and vaccination requirements for full compliance.
