Bangkok's 11 Transport Projects Worth 359.8 Billion Baht Resume After Election

The Transport Ministry has lined up 11 megaprojects worth more than THB359.8 billion for Cabinet review in 2026, covering road, rail and airport work that directly affects daily travel around Bangkok and its surrounding provinces.

Thailand held its House of Representatives election on February 8, with advance voting on February 1, leaving ministries unable to secure long-term budget commitments until a new government forms. The Transport Ministry received THB265.41 billion for 2026, an increase of THB20.83 billion or about 8.52 percent from the prior year, yet major schemes still require fresh Cabinet sign-off before construction can begin.

Projects tied to Bangkok travel

Several schemes target congestion on routes used by Bangkok commuters and visitors. The Chalong Rat Expressway to Outer Bangkok Ring Road East section carries a THB13.67 billion price tag and has already reached the Cabinet Secretariat. The Western Outer Ring Road Motorway linking Bang Bua Thong to Bang Pa-in is valued at THB15.86 billion and awaits agenda placement. The Srinakarin to Suvarnabhumi Airport Expressway, estimated at THB20.81 billion, is being prepared by the Expressway Authority of Thailand for submission.

Airport upgrades also feature prominently. Suvarnabhumi East Expansion is listed at THB13.83 billion, Don Mueang Phase 3 at THB36.83 billion, Chiang Mai Phase 1 at THB24 billion and Phuket Phase 2 at THB16 billion, together aimed at lifting passenger capacity to support tourism and economic activity.

Rail and remaining road schemes

Three double-track rail sections prepared by the State Railway of Thailand total THB101.25 billion: Chumphon to Surat Thani at THB29.10 billion, Surat Thani to Hat Yai and Songkhla at THB64.58 billion, and Hat Yai to Padang Besar at THB7.57 billion. Additional road work includes the Nakhon Pathom to Cha-am Motorway and PPP package at THB61.15 billion plus the Phuket Expressway at THB46.75 billion.

Ministry officials expect the full pipeline to create construction jobs and broader economic stimulus once approvals clear. A new Cabinet can move the projects forward immediately, with several already at the agency consultation or submission stage as of late 2025.
