Bangkok Sports Facilities Draw 11 Million Visits Amid 17 Percent Jump

Bangkok recorded more than 11 million visits to its public sports facilities last year, a 17 percent increase from 2023. The rise follows targeted upgrades at dozens of sites managed by the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration and shows residents are using the spaces for everything from weekend football matches to weekday yoga sessions.

The jump matters because many Bangkok households now seek low-cost ways to stay active without travelling far from home or work. Facilities in busy districts have become daily meeting points where office staff, students and families mix during evenings and lunch breaks, helping build regular routines that support both physical health and social ties.

Benjakitti leads local uptake

One clear example sits at Benjakitti Sports Centre in the Asoke-Sukhumvit-Khlong Toei stretch. The venue draws more than 30,000 users each month, many of them office workers who book slots online before or after shifts. Neighbouring recreation centres in the same corridor report similar patterns, with courts and pools filling quickly once bookings open each day.

The Culture, Sports and Tourism Department runs the network of 14 sports centres and 35 recreation centres citywide. These sites host both long-standing sports such as futsal, badminton and swimming plus newer options including pickleball, teqball and stand-up paddleboarding. The spread of activities lets different age groups and interest levels share the same grounds on any given evening.

Numbers show sustained demand

Investment of more than 490 million baht in 2024 went into resurfacing pitches, upgrading lighting and adding equipment at multiple locations. A further 353 million baht has been set aside for 2025 to keep the improvements moving. The CSTD Smart Member app now holds more than 208,867 accounts, with total bookings across all centres passing 1,075,629 and Benjakitti alone accounting for 68,340 of those reservations.

Residents can check availability and reserve spots through the same app on either iOS or Android. The digital system has removed earlier queues and made it easier for clubs and informal groups to plan regular sessions without clashing. Staff at the centres note that once people start attending a weekly class or team practice, many return with friends or colleagues, turning single visits into steady community use.
