Bangkok Tour Operators Expand Walking Routes Across 2 Districts

Bangkok tour operators recorded a 40 percent increase in bookings for neighborhood walks and canal trips during the first week of July compared with the same period last year.

The rise comes as residents seek low-cost outings that stay inside the city while international travel remains unsettled by distant conflicts and weather disruptions elsewhere in Asia.

Operators now run daily departures from the base of the Memorial Bridge in Banglamphu and from the pier at Wat Arun in Thonburi, covering routes that pass through 19th-century shophouses and active temple grounds.

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration’s tourism unit counted 12,400 participants across its registered local-tour programs last month, with average fees listed at 850 baht for a three-hour walk and 1,400 baht for a half-day boat circuit that includes lunch at a riverside market.

Routes Through Yaowarat and the Khlongs

One popular itinerary begins at the Odeon Circle entrance to Yaowarat Road and ends at the old tram depot on Charoen Krung, stopping at family-run gold shops and herbal-medicine stalls that opened in the 1950s. Another route leaves from the Bangkok Noi canal pier and threads through wooden houses built on stilts, with stops at a 120-year-old boat-repair yard still used by local fishermen.

Both routes operate rain or shine, with groups capped at 12 people to keep noise low in residential lanes.

Reservations open each morning at 8 a.m. through the city tourism website or at the information kiosk inside Siam Square’s Block C. Slots for the coming weekend are already filling, and organizers advise checking the daily canal water-level bulletin posted at each pier before setting out.
